1 Und König Astyages wurde zu seinen Vätern versammelt, und Kyrus von Persien übernahm sein Königreich.

And king Astyages was gathered to his fathers, and Cyrus of Persia received his kingdom.

2 Und Daniel unterhielt sich mit dem König und wurde mehr als alle seine Freunde geehrt.

And Daniel conversed with the king, and was honoured above all his friends.

3 Nun hatten die Babylonier ein Idol namens Bel, und es wurden täglich zwölf große Maße feines Mehl, vierzig Schafe und sechs Krüge Wein an ihn verbraucht.

Now the Babylons had an idol, called Bel, and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and six vessels of wine.

4 Und der König verehrte es und ging täglich hin, um es anzubeten: aber Daniel verehrte seinen eigenen Gott. Und der König sagte zu ihm: Warum betest du Bel nicht an?

And the king worshipped it and went daily to adore it: but Daniel worshipped his own God. And the king said unto him, Why dost not thou worship Bel?

5 Er antwortete und sprach: Weil ich keine von Menschen gemachten Idole anbeten darf, sondern den lebendigen Gott, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat und über alles Fleisch Herrschaft hat.

Who answered and said, Because I may not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, who hath created the heaven and the earth, and hath sovereignty over all flesh.

6 Da sagte der König zu ihm: Glaubst du nicht, dass Bel ein lebendiger Gott ist? Siehst du nicht, wie viel er isst und trinkt jeden Tag?

Then said the king unto him, Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living God? seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day?

7 Dann lächelte Daniel und sagte: O König, lass dich nicht täuschen: denn dies ist nur Ton innen und Bronze außen und hat niemals etwas gegessen oder getrunken.

Then Daniel smiled, and said, O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, and did never eat or drink any thing.

8 Der König wurde zornig und rief seine Priester und sagte zu ihnen: Wenn ihr mir nicht sagt, wer diese Ausgaben verschlingt, werdet ihr sterben.

So the king was wroth, and called for his priests, and said unto them, If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expences, ye shall die.

9 Aber wenn ihr mir versichern könnt, dass Bel sie verschlingt, dann wird Daniel sterben: denn er hat Bel gelästert. Und Daniel sagte zum König: Möge es gemäß deinem Wort geschehen.

But if ye can certify me that Bel devoureth them, then Daniel shall die: for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king, Let it be according to thy word.

10 Nun waren die Priester von Bel siebzig, neben ihren Frauen und Kindern. Und der König ging mit Daniel in den Tempel von Bel.

Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten, beside their wives and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel.

11 Da sagten Bel's Priester: Siehe, wir gehen hinaus: aber du, o König, bring das Essen und bereite den Wein vor und verschließe die Tür fest und versiegele sie mit deinem eigenen Siegel;

So Bel's priests said, Lo, we go out: but thou, O king, set on the meat, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast and seal it with thine own signet;

12 Und wenn du morgen hereinkommst und nicht findest, dass alles aufgegessen wurde, werden wir den Tod erleiden, oder Daniel, der uns fälschlicherweise beschuldigt.

And to morrow when thou comest in, if thou findest not that hath eaten up all, we will suffer death, or else Daniel, that speaketh falsely against us.

13 Und sie achteten wenig darauf: denn unter dem Tisch hatten sie einen geheimen Zugang gemacht, durch den sie ständig hineingingen und diese Dinge verzehrten.

And they little regarded it: for under the table they had made a privy entrance, whereby they entered in continually, and consumed those things.

14 Als sie hinausgegangen waren, stellte der König Speisen vor Bel. Nun hatte Daniel seinen Dienern befohlen, Asche zu holen, und diese streuten sie im ganzen Tempel in Anwesenheit des Königs allein: dann gingen sie hinaus, verschlossen die Tür und versiegelten sie mit dem Siegel des Königs und entfernten sich.

So when they were gone forth, the king set meats before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes, and those they strewed throughout all the temple in the presence of the king alone: then went they out, and shut the door, and sealed it with the king's signet, and so departed.

15 In der Nacht kamen die Priester mit ihren Frauen und Kindern, wie sie es gewohnt waren, und aßen und tranken alles auf.

Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children, as they were wont to do, and did eat and drinck up all.

16 Am Morgen stand der König früh auf, und Daniel mit ihm.

In the morning betime the king arose, and Daniel with him.

17 Und der König sagte: Daniel, sind die Siegel unversehrt? Und er sagte: Ja, o König, sie sind unversehrt.

And the king said, Daniel, are the seals whole? And he said, Yea, O king, they be whole.

18 Und sobald er die Tür geöffnet hatte, schaute der König auf den Tisch und rief mit lauter Stimme: Groß bist du, o Bel, und bei dir gibt es keinen Betrug.

And as soon as he had opened the dour, the king looked upon the table, and cried with a loud voice, Great art thou, O Bel, and with thee is no deceit at all.

19 Da lachte Daniel und hielt den König, dass er nicht hineingehen sollte, und sagte: Siehe nun den Boden und beachte wohl, wessen Fußspuren dies sind.

Then laughed Daniel, and held the king that he should not go in, and said, Behold now the pavement, and mark well whose footsteps are these.

20 Und der König sagte: Ich sehe die Fußspuren von Männern, Frauen und Kindern. Da wurde der König zornig,

And the king said, I see the footsteps of men, women, and children. And then the king was angry,

21 Und nahm die Priester mit ihren Frauen und Kindern, die ihm die geheimen Türen zeigten, wodurch sie hineinkamen und die Dinge auf dem Tisch verzehrten.

And took the priests with their wives and children, who shewed him the privy doors, where they came in, and consumed such things as were upon the table.

22 Deshalb tötete der König sie und übergab Bel in Daniels Macht, der ihn und seinen Tempel zerstörte.

Therefore the king slew them, and delivered Bel into Daniel's power, who destroyed him and his temple.

23 Und an demselben Ort war ein großer Drache, den die Babylonier anbeteten.

And in that same place there was a great dragon, which they of Babylon worshipped.

24 Und der König sagte zu Daniel: Willst du auch behaupten, dies sei aus Bronze? Siehe, er lebt, er isst und trinkt; du kannst nicht sagen, dass er kein lebendiger Gott ist: darum bete ihn an.

And the king said unto Daniel, Wilt thou also say that this is of brass? lo, he liveth, he eateth and drinketh; thou canst not say that he is no living god: therefore worship him.

25 Dann sagte Daniel zum König: Ich werde den Herrn, meinen Gott, anbeten: denn er ist der lebendige Gott.

Then said Daniel unto the king, I will worship the Lord my God: for he is the living God.

26 Aber gib mir Erlaubnis, o König, und ich werde diesen Drachen ohne Schwert oder Stab töten. Der König sagte: Ich gebe dir die Erlaubnis.

But give me leave, O king, and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff. The king said, I give thee leave.

27 Dann nahm Daniel Pech, Fett und Haare und kochte sie zusammen und machte Brocken daraus: diese legte er dem Drachen ins Maul, und so sprang der Drache auseinander. Und Daniel sagte: Siehe, dies sind die Götter, die ihr anbetet.

Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and did seethe them together, and made lumps thereof: this he put in the dragon's mouth, and so the dragon burst in sunder : and Daniel said, Lo, these are the gods ye worship.

28 Als die Babylonier das hörten, gerieten sie in großen Zorn und verschworen sich gegen den König, indem sie sagten: Der König ist ein Jude geworden und hat Bel zerstört, den Drachen getötet und die Priester hingerichtet.

When they of Babylon heard that, they took great indignation, and conspired against the king, saying, The king is become a Jew, and he hath destroyed Bel, he hath slain the dragon, and put the priests to death.

29 Da kamen sie zum König und sagten: Übergib uns Daniel, oder wir werden dich und dein Haus zerstören.

So they came to the king, and said, Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thine house.

30 Als der König sah, dass sie ihn stark bedrängten, ließ er sich dazu nötigen und übergab Daniel an sie.

Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore, being constrained, he delivered Daniel unto them:

31 Die warfen ihn in die Löwengrube, wo er sechs Tage lang war.

Who cast him into the lions' den: where he was six days.

32 Und in der Grube waren sieben Löwen, und sie hatten ihnen jeden Tag zwei Leichname und zwei Schafe gegeben: aber die wurden ihnen nicht gegeben, damit sie Daniel verschlingen könnten.

And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given them every day two carcases, and two sheep: which then were not given to them, to the intent they might devour Daniel.

33 Nun gab es in Judäa einen Propheten namens Habbakuk, der einen Eintopf zubereitet und Brot in einer Schüssel gebrochen hatte und auf das Feld ging, um es den Schnittern zu bringen.

Now there was in Jewry a prophet, called Habbacuc, who had made pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl, and was going into the field, for to bring it to the reapers.

34 Aber der Engel des Herrn sagte zu Habbakuk: Geh, bring das Essen, das du hast, nach Babylon zu Daniel, der in der Löwengrube ist.

But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc, Go, carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel, who is in the lions' den.

35 Und Habbakuk sagte: Herr, ich habe Babylon nie gesehen; ich weiß auch nicht, wo die Grube ist.

And Habbacuc said, Lord, I never saw Babylon; neither do I know where the den is.

36 Da nahm ihn der Engel des Herrn beim Schopf und trug ihn durch die Vehemenz seines Geistes nach Babylon über die Grube.

Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown, and bare him by the hair of his head, and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den.

37 Und Habbakuk rief: O Daniel, Daniel, nimm das Essen, das Gott dir geschickt hat.

And Habbacuc cried, saying, O Daniel, Daniel, take the dinner which God hath sent thee.

38 Und Daniel sagte: Du hast mich bedacht, o Gott: du hast auch die nicht verlassen, die dich suchen und lieben.

And Daniel said, Thou hast remembered me, O God: neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee.

39 Da stand Daniel auf und aß: und der Engel des Herrn brachte Habbakuk sofort wieder an seinen Ort.

So Daniel arose, and did eat: and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately.

40 Am siebten Tag kam der König, um Daniel zu beklagen: und als er zur Grube kam, blickte er hinein und siehe, Daniel saß.

Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel: and when he came to the den, he looked in, and behold, Daniel was sitting.

41 Da rief der König mit lauter Stimme: Groß ist der Herr, der Gott Daniels, und es gibt keinen anderen außer dir.

Then cried the king with a loud voice, saying, Great art Lord God of Daniel, and there is none other beside thee.

42 Und er zog ihn heraus und warf diejenigen, die die Ursache seiner Zerstörung waren, in die Grube: und sie wurden in einem Augenblick vor seinen Augen verzehrt.

And he drew him out, and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den: and they were devoured in a moment before his face.
